M.O.R.P.H

Mutually Organised Rehabilitation & Practical Help …for drug and alcohol users

M.O.R.PH was started by a couple of ex-addicts in January 2004 with a view to “doing something” to reduce the waiting-time for Community Drug Treatment – roughly 4 - 6-months at the time – which was felt to be unacceptable. Support for individual members is really a by-product of the group, rather than the main function, which is to represent the best interests of those still using.

M.O.R.P.H support a pragmatic “harm-reduction” approach to drugs. For some people, the thought of ‘total abstinence’ from all drugs, forever, is ‘scary’ and sometimes unwanted. So we work with people at whatever stage they’re at in their ‘journey’ – whether that’s reducing the amount of risk they’re under whilst using; choosing which type of treatment best suits them or simply educating them about their consumption and what harm they may be inflicting upon themselves ( around the mixing of different compounds, e.g. Alcohol + Cocaine = Coca-ethylene – which is a much more ‘corrosive’ compound than either of it’s 2 components )  or what can be done to reduce these ill-effects until such time as they want to stop.

M.O.R.P.H represents Drug/Service Users at various meetings, forums and committees locally, regionally and nationally.  M.O.R.P.H also provide a ‘Drop-in’ service where people can talk to a project worker, access information and get help, advice or support from people who have experienced ‘problematic drug use’. We also run an Advocacy Service for those experiencing difficulties with their treatment or who feel things aren’t going as they should in some way and their voice isn’t being heard.

M.O.R.P.H provide training and workshops, have a resource library of drug/treatment literature, host and attend conferences and events and produce a regular newsletter, ‘Morphin’.
We represent and advocate the views and best interests of anyone affected by drugs in any way and believe that everyone has a right to express themselves and be heard.

This is just a brief snap-shot of what we do, and we’re always happy to help-out with anything anyone thinks we may be able to provide info or an insight into – please don’t hesitate to contact us about all things drug-related. If we don’t have the answer – we probably know where to get it!
